Grey's Anatomy bid a heartfelt farewell to Eric Dane in its February 26 episode, following his passing at the age of 53. Dane died on February 19 after a courageous battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The episode included a moving montage showcasing his most memorable moments as Dr. Mark Sloan, affectionately known as "McSteamy." Snow Patrol's iconic song "Chasing Cars" underscored the clips, which culminated in a dedication: "In loving memory of Eric Dane 1972-2026."
Dane's tenure on the show began in 2006, with his death coincidentally falling on the 20th anniversary of his character's debut. Initially planned for a single appearance, Mark Sloan's role was expanded to a regular cast member due to his popularity. Dane's journey on the show concluded in 2012 when his character was written off.
He later starred as Cal Jacobs in Euphoria and guest-starred in NBC's Brilliant Minds. Dane and actress Rebecca Gayheart, 54, married in October 2004 and shared daughters Billie, 15, and Georgia, 14. They separated in September 2017, later calling off their divorce in March 2025, just before Dane announced his ALS diagnosis. Gayheart described their bond as familial despite their romance ending.
