The narrative begins in 1983 with 12-year-old Shaun, portrayed by Thomas Turgoose, grappling with the loss of his father during the Falklands War. Seeking connection, Shaun falls in with a group of skinheads, finding the friendship he desperately needs.
However, the group's dynamics shift with the arrival of Combo, played by Stephen Graham, whose volatile nature and racist ideology lead the members down a violent path. The subsequent series explore the characters' journeys through the late 1980s, navigating relationships, parenthood, and personal trauma.
This Is England is celebrated for its raw portrayal of difficult subjects, balanced with humor and warmth. The cast, including Vicky McClure as Lol and Joseph Gilgun as Woody, has become a notable ensemble of British talent. The franchise has garnered significant awards, including BAFTA wins for the original film and two of the TV series.
This Is England '86, '88, and '90 are currently available for streaming on Channel 4 in the UK. The original film can be watched via Prime Video or rented on Apple TV+.
