A fresh cinematic interpretation of Erich Kästner's iconic 1929 novel, "Emil and the Detectives," is currently in post-production. This live-action family feature is a modern take on the classic story, which has captivated readers worldwide for decades.
The narrative centers on Emil, a determined young boy whose journey to deliver money to his grandmother takes an unexpected turn when it's stolen. He then forms an unlikely alliance with a sharp group of fellow children to chase down the culprit.
Together, they navigate Berlin, piecing together clues and learning valuable lessons about bravery and the strength found in camaraderie. The film is set for a theatrical debut across German-speaking regions in the fall of 2026, distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures.
This new adaptation is a co-production involving UFA Fiction, Warner Bros. Film Productions Germany, and UFA Mitte. Its creation has been supported by various German film funding bodies, including Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg and the German Film Funding Fund.
