Summary
- Elsa Lanchester and Charles Laughton married in 1927.
- They starred together in twelve films.
- Lanchester feared on-screen romance would endanger their relationship.

Elsa Lanchester, famed for her role as the Bride of Frankenstein, shared a profound connection with her husband, actor Charles Laughton. They first met in 1927 on the set of "Mr. Prohack" and married the same year, embarking on a decades-long partnership that saw them appear in twelve films together.
Despite their frequent on-screen collaborations, including "The Private Life of Henry VIII" and "Witness for the Prosecution," Lanchester expressed reservations about playing romantic leads with Laughton. She felt that portraying intimacy on screen could expose their private life and endanger their real-world relationship, likening it to "going to bed in a shop window."
Laughton, an Academy Award winner for Best Actor, found unwavering support in Lanchester throughout his career. He recounted an instance where she fiercely defended his self-esteem when he doubted his appearance in a role. Their marriage lasted until Laughton's death on December 15, 1962, at the age of 63, following complications from a ruptured disc and subsequent surgery.
