Elkie Brooks: Rock Queen's 60-Year Journey

Elkie Brooks, widely known as the British Queen of Blues, is currently on 'The Long Farewell Tour,' celebrating sixty years in the music industry. Born Elaine Bookbinder in Salford in 1945, Brooks's career began in the 1960s, including a period supporting The Beatles. She later co-founded Vinegar Joe before launching a successful solo career with hits like 'Pearl's a Singer.'

Brooks, who is now 81 years old, attributes her enduring energetic stage presence to a disciplined lifestyle and a lifelong passion for singing. Her early influences included jazz and blues legends, and she honed her vocal projection with lessons from her local synagogue cantor. Despite facing a male-dominated industry and personal challenges, Brooks has maintained her confidence and unique style.

Her journey has included memorable performances, such as playing the Royal Albert Hall, and overcoming industry hurdles, including a name change orchestrated by Don Arden due to antisemitism concerns. Brooks also achieved a black belt in karate in 1995 and continues to train, contributing to her remarkable vitality and ability to perform at her age.
