Critics Slam 'Divisive' Theatre Press Night
16 Mar
Summary
- Scottish theatre critics protested exclusion from a musical's press night.
- The Royal Lyceum Theatre invited only Scottish publications.
- Critics argue the move suggests a London-centric and two-tier approach.

Fifteen Scottish theatre journalists have formally protested a decision by the Royal Lyceum in Edinburgh to limit press night invitations for the new musical "One Day" to only Scottish publications. In a letter addressed to the theatre's board, the critics described the move as "divisive" and "London-centric," raising concerns about a perceived hierarchy that undervalues critics and audiences in Scotland compared to London.
This policy, which plans a separate press event for national publications when the show transfers to London, has led to the impression that the Edinburgh run is a preview. The critics emphasized that publicly funded institutions in Scotland should have their work rigorously reviewed and debated as part of Scottish public life. They expressed their welcome for co-productions but drew a line when such collaborations lead to the exclusion of leading Scottish critical voices from public discourse.
