Construction for the £100m Eden Project in Morecambe will commence next month, targeting a 2028 opening. Originally announced in 2018, the Lancashire site will focus on marine life, drawing inspiration from Cornwall's popular attraction. The revised design features one biodome, reduced from four due to a funding gap, which recently secured £4.5m for its central exhibit, The Elder Tree sculpture.
The project will feature two buildings, the Realm of the Sun and Realm of the Moon, housed in shell-inspired structures. These will explore nature through immersive environments, with the Realm of the Sun showcasing living plants and the Realm of the Moon a dark, rockpool-themed space. A 1.5-acre community garden will open to the public in spring 2027, serving as the first completed attraction.
Anticipated to draw over 500,000 visitors yearly, Eden Project Morecambe is projected to create over 1,000 jobs, bolstering the regional economy. The £100m cost is supported by £50m in UK government investment and local council contributions. Similar Eden Project sites are in development globally, including in Dundee and Australia.
