EastEnders Star's Tragic End: Heroin & Illness Battle

Actress Sandy Ratcliff, best known for her role as Sue Osman in EastEnders, passed away in April 2019. Her death followed a protracted struggle with heroin addiction and two terminal illnesses. Ratcliff, who portrayed the troubled wife of Ali Osman from 1985 to 1989, faced significant personal challenges concurrent with her on-screen performances. These included a public battle with heroin dependency, which ultimately led to her character's departure from the show via a mental collapse storyline.

Ratcliff's life was marked by adversity even before her rise to fame, with a troubled youth and prior legal issues. Following her exit from EastEnders, she made headlines when her then-boyfriend, Michael Shorey, was tried for the murders of two women. Ratcliff testified, attempting to provide him with an alibi, but Shorey was convicted and received two life sentences.

In her later years, Ratcliff reportedly attempted to overcome her addiction and explored careers as a mechanic and ambulance driver, as well as pursuing studies to become a counsellor. However, reports indicated she later relied on disability benefits. Her son disclosed that she had been battling two forms of cancer and had suffered three strokes prior to her passing at the age of 70. The coroner determined her death resulted from a combination of morphine use and her terminal illnesses.
