Zoe Kazan is adapting John Steinbeck's classic American novel "East of Eden" for Netflix as a limited series, a project first announced in 2022. Kazan, niece of director Elia Kazan, follows in her grandfather's footsteps with this new vision. The series, starring Florence Pugh as the indelible antiheroine Cathy Ames, explores the timeless themes of good and evil through the multigenerational story of the Trask family.
The ensemble cast includes Christopher Abbott, Mike Faist, Hoon Lee, Tracy Letts, and Ciarán Hinds, among others. Florence Pugh's casting as Cathy Ames was a long-held dream for Kazan, who envisioned Pugh bringing the character's complexity to life. Abbott, portraying Cal Trask, noted that this version allows for more exploration of the character's humanity.
Garth Davis and Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre directed different segments of the series, with Kazan serving as co-showrunner. This marks a departure from the 1955 film adaptation by Elia Kazan, which starred James Dean and won Jo Van Fleet an Oscar for her portrayal of Cathy. The Netflix series is set to premiere sometime this fall.
