In a recent podcast interview, Earl Spencer, the 9th Earl Spencer, has shared intimate details about the eulogy he delivered at Princess Diana's funeral in September 1997. Spencer, who was 36 years old at the time, said he had initially planned a "very traditional" tribute, focusing on Diana's childhood. However, he soon realized that this did not capture the essence of who his sister was.
Spencer explained that after flying back to the UK from South Africa, he had considered finding someone else to give the eulogy. But his mother and sisters insisted that he should be the one to deliver it. As he started putting the tribute together, Spencer said he "knew" his role was not to speak about Diana, but to "speak for" her.
The Earl further revealed that he felt a sense of "duty" to be the guardian of Diana's sons, Prince William and Prince Harry, even though he had no legal standing in that regard. This realization prompted him to rewrite the eulogy in just an hour and a half, delivering a powerful tribute that denounced the mistreatment of his sister and pledged to ensure her sons' souls could "sing openly" as she had planned.
Spencer also disclosed that he had removed one section of the eulogy that mentioned media mogul Rupert Murdoch, deeming it "rather unnecessary." This revelation comes as Murdoch's News Group Newspaper recently apologized to Prince Harry for the "serious intrusion" of his and his late mother's private lives.
