Puja Ground Locked, Durga Fest Prep Halted
28 Sep
Summary
- Durga Puja preparations halted as venue locked by authorities.
- Organizers face significant financial losses due to dispute.
- The club has organized Durga Puja at the ground since 1948.
Preparations for the annual Durga Puja at a Sealdah ground were abruptly halted on Sunday when railway police personnel locked the venue. The Sealdah Railway Athletic Club, which has organized the festival at this location since 1948, was forced to stop work just three weeks before the event is scheduled to begin. Organizers allege that no clear reason was provided for the closure of the park, which now remains secured with police presence.
This unexpected development has put the club in a precarious financial situation, as advance payments for the idol, decorators, and other services have already been made for the Rs 35 lakh-Rs 40 lakh budget. Additionally, stall bookings for a concurrent carnival have been cancelled. The puja committee, having been denied permission despite applying in June, is now considering approaching the courts for resolution.
