Dressmaker Game: Design Your Dream Dress!

Dressmaker, an innovative game developed by Cozy Lives, a division of South Africa's Free Lives studio, empowers players to design and create dresses with unparalleled detail. The game allows users to meticulously choose fabrics for each panel, sew them together, and finish with various trims and accessories. Players can fulfill commissions for characters with diverse tastes or design dresses for general sale.

The development team, a core of three from Free Lives including Jonathan Hau-Yoon and supported by Sabrina Becker, has been working on the project since a playable prototype was first shared in July 2025. Free Lives, known for titles like GORN and Terra Nil, officially greenlit the project in September 2025.

Dressmaker features significant technical depth, simulating the real-world process of pattern making, fabric manipulation, and precise sewing. The game adapts to customer measurements, adjusting both the 3D dress and its 2D pattern pieces to minimize fabric stretching, presenting a complex yet rewarding challenge.

The South African indie game scene is described as a "golden age," with Free Lives actively investing in its growth through initiatives like the Playtopia Foundation and the Jam Dole stipend for emerging developers. Dressmaker is slated for release on PC and Mac via Steam on September 21, 2026.
