Greenville has a new destination for Black arts and culture with the approval of The DreamBox Theatre. The City Board of Zoning Appeals granted a permit for this 75-seat black box theater, a project by Clark Nesbitt's non-profit production company, No Dreams Deferred. The venue is set to highlight Black playwrights and performers, offering a space for their stories to be told.
This theater is designed to preserve and celebrate the culture and legacy of Black people in America. Nesbitt emphasized the importance of telling these narratives by Black writers and through Black performers. The board expanded the operating hours, allowing shows Monday through Thursday evenings, in addition to the originally proposed Friday and Sunday slots.
The DreamBox Theatre, located at 40 John McCarroll Way, will be a more intimate setting compared to Nesbitt's current performance space at the Simpsonville Art Center. It will serve better for practice and teaching due to its central location in the Upstate. Nesbitt, a former employee of the Phyllis Wheatley Community Center, plans to open the new theater with performances from March 20 to 22.
