The Door County Historical Society was recently honored with two major statewide awards from the Wisconsin Historical Society. These recognitions highlight the organization's sustained commitment to local history preservation and its successful restoration of the Eagle Bluff Light Station. The society received the Reuben Gold Thwaites Trophy for Local History, acknowledging its excellence in community service over at least five years. This award holds special significance as the society celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2026.
The Historic Rehabilitation Award was given for the restoration of the Eagle Bluff Light Station, located in Peninsula State Park. This project, which began its physical work in 2024, meticulously restored the 158-year-old lighthouse and keeper's dwelling. The efforts aimed to recreate the site's appearance from 1883 to 1918 and transform it into an immersive museum detailing Door County's maritime history and the life of lighthouse keepers.
