The North American distribution rights for "Donkey Princess," the latest film from Chilean directors Cristóbal León and Joaquín Cociña, have been acquired. This acquisition by KimStim renews their collaboration after previously distributing the duo's acclaimed film, "The Wolf House."
"Donkey Princess" made its debut at the Locarno Film Festival and was later shown at Fantastic Fest. KimStim intends to release the film in North American theaters in 2027, with subsequent digital and home-video releases planned. The film has been described as a handmade, darkly funny, and gloriously strange fairy tale.
Set in a kingdom where love is forbidden, the story centers on Princess Diana, who defies royal decree by loving Lalo. A magical bracelet transports her across different worlds and timelines on a quest to find her dreams and lost love. The film is loosely based on Charles Perrault's "Donkeyskin" and features a mix of live action, stop-motion, animation, and digital imagery.
The score was composed by Jean-Benoît Dunckel of AIR, and the film stars Antonia Giesen, Andrew Bargsted, and Francisco Melo. "Donkey Princess" is a Chilean-led co-production involving companies from France, the Netherlands, Uruguay, and Germany. León and Cociña are known for their diverse body of work in animation, visual art, and live action.
