The part, which Faye Dunaway eventually played, was for a witch character. Parton was reportedly offered $7 million for the role but declined, explaining her reasoning to the Chicago Tribune in 1992.
Parton expressed that she did not want to play an evil part, questioning why she was perceived as an "evil witch." She stated her desire was to be an "entertainer" who makes people feel good, rather than an actress who plays dark characters. She felt she was not a great enough actress to portray roles completely separate from her own persona.

She also mentioned other potential projects that never materialized, including a biopic of Mary Kay Ash and a musical.
