A lavish six-part Polish-language adaptation of Boleslaw Prus's novel "The Doll" has been released on Netflix, aiming to introduce the work to a global audience.
"The Doll," first published in 1890, is a revered masterpiece in Poland but remains relatively obscure internationally. The novel follows Stanislaw Wokulski, a wealthy businessman, and his infatuation with the aristocrat Izabela Lecka.
The Netflix series recreates 19th-century Warsaw with elaborate sets and costumes, though it omits some complexities from the nearly 700-page novel. Director Pawel Maslona has reimagined the story, focusing on the central love affair and modernizing Izabela's character.
This adaptation follows the 2026-09-14T10:17:26+00:00 release of a separate Polish film adaptation. The two screen versions are the first adaptations of "The Doll" since a 1977 TV mini-series.
