BBC Plans Major Regeneration for Doctor Who Series
14 Jul
Summary
- BBC is seeking new platforms for Doctor Who.
- The annual Christmas special has been cancelled.
- The show's future is described as unpredictable and new.

The BBC is reportedly "working hard" on regenerating the beloved science fiction series Doctor Who. This development comes as the show faces an uncertain future, with its annual Christmas special being axed for the second year in a row. Director-general Matt Brittin confirmed that the BBC is "going out to tender" for the program, offering it to other platforms.
This strategic move aims to creatively renew a show that has successfully regenerated multiple times throughout its 60-plus year history. The decision follows screenwriter Russell T Davies's departure in June, who described Doctor Who's future as "unpredictable and new." The BBC confirmed the cancellation of the Christmas episode, stating it was a collective decision made to "invest in the long-term future of the show."
While a one-off special has been foregone, fans can anticipate "more Doctor Who than a one-off" when the TARDIS lands again. The corporation also mentioned that a previously announced Doctor Who animation series is currently in production for CBeebies. The original series began in 1963 and was revived in 2005, featuring numerous actors in the titular role.
