DJ Katapila, a Ghanaian DJ known for his marathon sets, has released his debut album 'Trotro,' a unique fusion of traditional Ga dance music with early Chicago house and Detroit techno. The album serves as a spirited tribute to his home city, Accra, with its title track humorously imitating the calls of the city's essential minibus system, the trotros.
Growing up in Accra's Jamestown district, Ishmael Abbey, now known as DJ Katapila, developed his signature sound by incorporating elements of kpanlogo and azonto, precursors to modern Ga dance music, alongside the four-on-the-floor beat of house and the futuristic textures of techno. This blend creates a sound that is both deeply local and globally influenced.
The self-released debut album, though never physically pressed to cassette, possesses a nostalgic rawness. Tracks like 'Sakawa' and 'Cocoawra' clearly showcase the influence of Ga rhythms, while 'Nkran Dokunu' celebrates Accra's staple food with a lively tempo. "Ice-Inc" offers a darker, Detroit techno-inspired sound, reflecting Accra's role as a hub for exported and imported cultural influences.
