In a significant departure from typical loud celebrations, Dharampeth in Nagpur hosted a major Dahi Handi event on Sunday without the use of DJs. The West Nagpur BJYM, led by former mayor Sandip Joshi, opted for devotional bhajans, a live orchestra, and dhol-tasha music, marking what is believed to be Maharashtra's first major Dahi Handi celebration of its kind.
This initiative aligns with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis's emphasis on reducing excessive DJ usage and encouraging more traditional festival practices. Joshi stated the celebration was infused with 'bhakti bhav,' respecting prescribed sound limits as per court directives. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari was present and lauded the event as a cultural celebration.
The DJ-free format contrasted with the earlier Badkas Chowk incident, where sound system usage required adjustments. Elsewhere, MLA Mohan Mate's Dahi Handi event at Chhota Tajbagh featured loud music within decibel limits, with invited Mumbai Govinda pathaks and local teams participating. This demonstrates varied approaches to festival celebrations adhering to regulations.
