Supermassive Games has implemented a significant new feature in its upcoming title, Directive 8020, to enhance player experience. The "Turning Points" system, a rewind functionality, has been a long-sought addition, according to executive producer Dan McDonald. This feature directly addresses feedback from players who often feel discouraged when they are unable to save every character, a common challenge in the studio's narrative-driven games.
The "Turning Points" system allows players to go back and alter decisions that lead to unfavorable outcomes, such as character deaths. McDonald explained that while the studio wants players to experience the emotional impact of loss, they also want to empower players to shape their narrative journey. This allows players to explore different story paths and ensure their preferred characters survive.
Furthermore, McDonald noted that a substantial portion of their dedicated fanbase replays games multiple times to uncover all possible endings and achievements. The rewind feature, along with other systems like "Turning Points," is designed to support this desire for complete exploration and collection. Directive 8020 is scheduled for release on May 12 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and Series S, and PC.
