Filmmaker Raja Krishna Menon is reigniting his passion project, a biopic centered on the remarkable life of Manipuri boxer Ngangom Dingko Singh. Although initial plans for the film, which once considered Shahid Kapoor for the lead, were put on hold, Menon remains committed to telling Dingko's story. He recently shared in an interview that the boxer's life is extraordinary and "came from a place that needs representation."
Menon indicated that while the film is a high priority, casting requires a new approach. He explained, "I don't know if Shahid would be interested anymore in doing it because, one, Dingko was very young... in his 20s... when much of his life's story took place." He believes a younger actor is now essential for the role.
Ngangom Dingko Singh's achievements include a gold medal in the 54kg category at the 1998 Asian Games in Bangkok, a significant victory that cemented his status in Indian sports. He later competed in the 2000 Sydney Olympics and was recognized with the Arjuna Award and the Padma Shri. Dingko Singh passed away in 2021 at the age of 42, leaving behind a legacy that Menon hopes to capture on film.
