9 Sep
Summary
- Album features 19 unreleased J Dilla beats.
- New Busta Rhymes raps complement vintage Dilla productions.
- Dillagence II is a sequel to the 2007 mixtape Dillagence.
The release of Dillagence II offers listeners 19 previously unheard beats from the acclaimed producer J Dilla, paired with new verses from Busta Rhymes. This project serves as a follow-up to the 2007 mixtape, Dillagence, continuing the exploration of the unique artistic synergy between the rapper and producer.
The album highlights the understated yet potent collaboration between Busta Rhymes and J Dilla, which spanned from 1996 until Dilla's passing. Dillagence II features a collection of Dilla's distinctive, often unconventional, musical sketches, providing a foundation for Rhymes' energetic performance.
While the album excels in its more raw, mixtape-style tracks, it falters when attempting broader appeal with guest features. Notable tracks include "How the Boss Will Deliver" and "SPAZZZ," showcasing Dilla's innovative production and Busta's dynamic delivery. A collaboration with D'Angelo, "This Woman," also offers a glimpse into vintage sounds.
Despite moments that lean towards the melodramatic with certain guest appearances, Dillagence II ultimately celebrates the enduring magic of J Dilla's beats and Busta Rhymes' consistent craftsmanship.
