A Different World Revival Hits Netflix Sept. 24

Netflix is set to launch a new "A Different World" series on September 24, 2026, exactly 39 years after the original sitcom's debut. The sequel will be set at the fictional Hillman College and centers on Deborah Wayne, the youngest daughter of original characters Whitley Gilbert and Dwayne Wayne. Many cast members from the original series reunited for a successful 2024 HBCU tour.

The original "A Different World" ran for six seasons from 1987 to 1993, following students at the Historically Black College or University. While initially focusing on Denise Huxtable, the show later shifted its attention to Whitley Gilbert and Dwayne Wayne. The cast has expressed pride in the show's ability to tackle serious subjects with humor.

Notable cast members have maintained active careers. Jasmine Guy directed episodes and won multiple awards for her role as Whitley. Kadeem Hardison, who played Dwayne, has had a steady career in television and film. Dawnn Lewis, who portrayed Jaleesa, also wrote the show's theme song and is a Grammy Award-winning singer. Sinbad, who played Coach Walter Oakes, has had a successful comedy career and recently returned to acting after a stroke.
