Global Deal for 'A Tale of Two Cities' Adaptation
25 Feb
Summary
- French major sells Dickens adaptation 'A Tale of Two Cities' internationally.
- The four-episode series boasts strong casting and a healthy budget.
- Federation is actively involved in deficit financing and pre-sales for shows.

Federation has successfully pre-sold its adaptation of Charles Dickens' 'A Tale of Two Cities' to broadcasters in Canada (CBC), Belgium (RTBF), and Nordic countries including YLE, SVT, NRK, DR, and RUV. This highly anticipated series, created by Daniel West and directed by Hong Khaou, stars Kit Harington, François Civil, and Mirren Mack. It focuses on the story of French emigré Charles Darnay amidst the French Revolution.
Despite a currently challenging market for period dramas, the four-episode limited series has surpassed sales expectations due to its strong IP, high-profile cast, and healthy budget. Federation is actively engaging in deficit financing and pre-sales, a strategy that has become increasingly important as they look to fill financing gaps for major English-language co-productions. This approach is exemplified by their involvement in 'A Tale of Two Cities' and other projects like 'Around the World in 80 Days' and an upcoming adaptation of 'Gulliver's Travels'.
In addition to 'A Tale of Two Cities,' Federation has also sold Jean-Xavier de Lestrade's Bataclan drama 'Des Vivants' (Those Who Lived) to HBO Max in France and other European territories. The company is also involved with 'Dustfall,' an Australian series featuring Torv's Detective Tig Pollard investigating a mysterious case, which has pre-sold to the BBC and is set to compete at Series Mania.
