At the 2026 Santa Barbara International Film Festival, director Paul Thomas Anderson presented the Hammond Cinema Vanguard Award to his "One Battle After Another" stars: Leonardo DiCaprio, Sean Penn, and Benicio del Toro. Anderson lauded the trio as "a dying breed" of talented, mysterious, and classically charismatic movie stars.
This event marked the conclusion of the press tour for their film. While all three actors are known for being selective, they shared insights on stage. Both Penn and del Toro expressed reluctance to watch their own performances, with Penn preferring to focus on strong writing. DiCaprio highlighted the crucial role of first assistant director Adam Somner in completing "The Revenant."
DiCaprio also announced his upcoming role in Martin Scorsese's "What Happens at Night," alongside Jennifer Lawrence, set to begin filming in two weeks. He confirmed plans for a Frank Sinatra biopic with Scorsese but denied involvement in a potential "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood" follow-up.
