Princess Diana's famous "revenge dress" is poised to command a significant sum, with estimates ranging from $150,000 to $300,000 (approximately £110,000 to £220,000) at Sotheby's New York auction in December. This striking black silk gown by Christina Stambolian made headlines when Diana wore it to a 1994 fundraising event, the same evening Prince Charles publicly acknowledged his affair.
The dress, distinguished by its plunging neckline, above-the-knee hemline, and bold color, shattered traditional royal fashion norms. It will embark on a global exhibition tour, stopping in Hong Kong, Geneva, and New York, with a public viewing also scheduled at Sotheby's London from September 18 to September 24.
This marks the dress's first sale since June 1997, when Diana auctioned many of her garments for charity. A portion of the proceeds from this sale will be donated to NHS Lothian Charity. The auction will also include a catalogue signed by Diana and Stambolian, noting the Prince of Wales's suggestion for the charity fundraiser.
