12 Sep
Summary
- Blizzard Entertainment and Netflix are developing an animated Diablo series.
- This is the first of potentially more Blizzard universe adaptations on Netflix.
- The Diablo franchise, first released in 1996, features action-RPGs and dark fantasy worlds.
Blizzard Entertainment revealed on Saturday that it is collaborating with Netflix to produce an animated series centered on its iconic Diablo franchise. This announcement follows previous reports that suggested potential adaptations of Blizzard's intellectual properties, including Overwatch and World of Warcraft, which were previously involved in legal disputes between the companies.
The press release from Blizzard indicates that the Diablo series is merely the first step, with "even more taking shape across our universes." This suggests that other beloved Blizzard franchises may also receive animated or live-action adaptations on the streaming platform.
The Diablo game series, originally launched in 1996, is celebrated for its isometric action-RPG gameplay. Players immerse themselves in the dark fantasy world of Sanctuary, battling monsters, collecting loot, and striving to become stronger. The most recent installment, Diablo IV, was released in 2023 and achieved considerable success for the studio, with two expansions already launched.
Earlier reports from late August highlighted Xbox's interest in expanding its presence in Hollywood through media adaptations. The Diablo franchise and other Blizzard titles are expected to be part of this strategy, though the extent of Netflix's access to Xbox's IP library remains to be seen. Netflix has a history of adapting video games, with titles like Castlevania and Sonic the Hedgehog already available on its service.
