A striking mural celebrating the renowned writer DH Lawrence has been unveiled in Eastwood, Nottinghamshire. The artwork, located just metres from his birthplace, features a portrait of the author alongside a phoenix, inspired by the cover of his famous novel 'Lady Chatterley's Lover'.
Artist Nathan Bainbridge, from Nottingham, designed and painted the piece on Victoria Street over approximately one week. He expressed his enjoyment in working on a project linked to the DH Lawrence Birthplace Museum and researching the author's background. Fellow artist Ben Packer assisted with the mural.
The project, supported by Broxtowe Borough Council, was funded by £5,400 from the East Midlands Combined County Authority, utilizing UK government funds. Council representatives highlighted the positive impact of art on public spaces and community mood, noting the mural's ability to bring joy and brighten the street.
East Midlands mayor Claire Ward praised the mural for honoring Eastwood's literary heritage and adding new color and creativity to the town centre, celebrating DH Lawrence in the place where his story began.
