Veteran actor Derek Martin, celebrated for his portrayal of Charlie Slater in the BBC soap EastEnders, has passed away at the age of 92. Martin, who played the iconic taxi driver and patriarch for 15 years, died in hospital. His character, Charlie Slater, was a fan favorite, known for his protective nature towards his predominantly female family in Walford, and first appeared on the show in 2000.
Born in East London in April 1933, Martin embarked on an acting career after leaving his job at Smithfield Meat Market in 1962. He previously worked in numerous other jobs and served in the Royal Air Force. His acting journey began as a stuntman, including roles in Doctor Who, before transitioning to acting and appearing in numerous other television series such as Z-Cars and The Sweeney.
Beyond EastEnders, Martin was also known for his involvement with the Grand Order of Water Rats, a fraternity and charity, where he served as 'King Rat' from 2010 to 2011. Colleagues remember him as a warm, funny, and distinguished individual. Martin had two sons, Jonathan and David, from his two marriages.
