Mayumi Yoshida's debut feature, the Japanese-language drama 'Akashi,' has secured significant distribution deals in Canada and Japan following its showcase at the European Film Market in Berlin. Tokyo-based Rabbit House is planning a theatrical release in Japan.
KinoSmith, a Canadian indie distributor, has acquired all rights for the Canadian market. The film, which screened on February 14th, tells the story of Kana, a Vancouver-based artist who returns to Tokyo after ten years abroad for her grandmother's funeral. She discovers her grandfather had another lover, leading Kana to confront her own life choices and her grandmother's past.
The narrative weaves a multigenerational love story, examining the complexities of love, sacrifice, and family expectations faced by women in different eras. Shot in Vancouver and Tokyo, 'Akashi' has received multiple awards at film festivals.
Both KinoSmith and Rabbit House expressed enthusiasm for the film, praising Yoshida's talent and the movie's emotional resonance. The production was helmed by Musubi Arts & Experimental Forest Films, with Tyler Hagan and Nach Dudsdeemaytha as producers.
