Death In Paradise: Real Island vs. TV Magic
15 Feb
Summary
- Superfan notes real Guadeloupe lacks street parties and spicy food.
- Filming locations are accessible year-round, offering behind-the-scenes glimpses.
- Some fans could previously interact directly with show props and vehicles.

A devoted fan of the BBC series "Death In Paradise" has revealed how the real-life filming location, Guadeloupe, differs from its on-screen portrayal as Saint Marie. While the island boasts stunning natural beauty, the fan pointed out that aspects like street parties and vibrant local cuisine are exclusive to the fictional setting. Many viewers are drawn to Guadeloupe, inspired by the show's popularity which first aired in 2011 and continues to attract millions.
Superfan Mike Mitchel has visited Guadeloupe three times, even serving as an extra twice. He observed that the island's daily life doesn't mirror the on-screen festivities. Mitchel highlighted that accessible filming locations, such as Catherine's Bar, can be visited when not in use by the production crew. He noted that much of the show is filmed on the island's west side, which is more picturesque than the marshier east coast.
Another fan, Selina Ryan, who first visited in 2019, recalled that earlier access to show props, like the detective jeep, was more readily available. While paid tours exist, their cost was deemed excessive by some visitors. The series, now in its 15th season, premiered on January 30 and features Don Gilet as the new lead detective, DI Mervin Wilson.
