Rapper DC3, a two-time Mobo Award winner, has launched a project celebrating youth clubs, which are vital community spaces but have faced significant closures across the UK.
Since 2010, the country has seen four in 10 youth clubs shut down. To counter this trend, DC3 wrote a song called 'Home,' emphasizing youth clubs as a second home for many young individuals. He featured young people from Carney's Community Centre in Battersea in his music video.
Chenjerai, who hails from Northampton and used youth clubs there, believes these spaces offer a crucial environment for young people to express themselves and grow. Carney's Community Centre, which serves up to 1,000 young people annually, has benefited from BBC Children In Need grants since 2022, receiving £45,000 to fund staff and coaches until 2028.
The centre engages up to 50 young people per evening, using activities like boxing to build relationships and provide support for school, employment, and personal development. Young participants have also contributed to a youth club dictionary, with definitions reflecting their personal experiences and sense of belonging.
