David Koepp, a celebrated screenwriter known for adapting major works, has now turned his talents to his own 2019 novel, 'Cold Storage.' This new thriller, which opened in theaters recently, centers on a pair of young slackers working the night shift at a self-storage facility in Kansas.
Unbeknownst to them, the facility once served as a government vault where a deadly fungus was smuggled decades ago. The fungus has now awakened, transforming those it infects into ghoulish creatures that spread spores. Liam Neeson joins the cast as an experienced individual who has previously confronted the contagion.
Koepp initially conceived 'Cold Storage' as a movie idea but found himself engrossed in writing the prose, eventually completing a full novel. He confessed that while writing, thoughts of cinematic adaptation, such as combining scenes, were always present in the back of his mind.
The film's journey to the screen involved several studios, including Paramount and Universal, before finding backing from StudioCanal. Directed by Jonny Campbell, the movie was primarily filmed in Italy due to European tax incentives, with a brief prologue shot in Morocco.
Koepp, who did not direct this adaptation, cited a desire for a fresh perspective and his own aversion to extensive special effects as reasons for handing over directing duties. He noted that mixed-genre films have a challenging track record with major studios. He also expressed concern about smaller films like 'Cold Storage' competing with larger releases during its opening weekend.
Looking ahead, Koepp is working on a third novel and hopes to direct 'Yard Work,' a family drama adapted from his Audible story. He also penned 'Disclosure Day,' a highly anticipated Steven Spielberg film about extraterrestrial life.
