Archuleta's Darkest Days: Suicide Search Before Faith

In his upcoming memoir, 'Devout: Losing My Faith to Find Myself,' David Archuleta discloses a deeply challenging period where he contemplated suicide. The 35-year-old 'American Idol' alum confessed to driving to find secluded spots where he could end his life without harming others. Archuleta recalled identifying a bridge he knew would be fatal if he drove off it. His ultimate decision not to act, however, stemmed not from a fear of death, but from a fear of surviving and being permanently disabled, thus losing another opportunity to take his own life.

The turning point for Archuleta arrived during a prayer. He beseeched for his attraction to men to cease, but instead, he perceived a divine message. This inner voice reportedly conveyed that his being gay was not an error and that he possessed the freedom to love whom he chose. Archuleta publicly shared his identity as queer in 2021, marking a significant step in his personal journey of reconciling his faith with his sexuality.
