Diggs Sings Homelander is God: 'It's Just a Mirror'

Daveed Diggs, known for his roles in 'Hamilton,' has contributed an Emmy-nominated musical number to the final season of Prime Video's 'The Boys.' Initially hesitant to engage in musical performances post-'Hamilton,' Diggs was persuaded by showrunner Eric Kripke and composer Christopher Lennertz to perform as the superhero preacher Oh Father.

Diggs and Lennertz collaborated on the song "Raise Him Up," a funk-gospel track where Oh Father proclaims Homelander, the show's anti-hero, to be God. The lyrics, such as "Now the world's too dark for a Jew in robes and sandals/I'll take a god who lasers vandals," draw inspiration from the observed trajectory of the religious right and the political co-option of places of worship in the United States.

Lennertz noted that the song was written and filmed well before the 2024 election, yet its themes eerily paralleled contemporary political events and imagery, including a politician pretending to heal and golden statues. Diggs described the song not as a "funhouse mirror" but as a direct reflection of the current political climate.

The creators emphasized that "The Boys" and this song are intended to critique corruption, greed, and power-hungry individuals. They clarified that the piece is not mocking any religion, deity, or belief system, but rather highlighting how power can corrupt and warp societal structures, a core theme of the series since its inception.
