Dame Julie Kenny has received a posthumous award for her pivotal work in the campaign to save Wentworth Woodhouse. The businesswoman, who passed away in February at age 67, was selected for the Sheila Cameron Award for Outstanding Community Service by the Rotherham Civic Society.
Dame Julie led the successful project that facilitated the Wentworth Woodhouse Preservation Trust's purchase of the Grade I listed stately home in 2017. This achievement initiated a 25-year plan for its restoration and regeneration. Her family accepted the award, acknowledging her deep admiration for the house and her commitment to making it a beacon of heritage.
As High Sheriff of South Yorkshire in 2012, Dame Julie was captivated by Wentworth Woodhouse's beauty and resolved to restore its status. While she will not see the vision fully realized, her leadership was crucial to the preservation efforts. The award celebrates her indelible mark on this significant story of heritage rescue.
