The Kunsthalle Bremen is showcasing "The Dachshund: An Icon off the Leash," a unique exhibition delving into the history of the dachshund in art. This exhibition, which opened on Saturday, highlights a diverse collection of artwork from dachshund enthusiasts and owners such as Pablo Picasso, David Hockney, and Andy Warhol.
Beyond paintings, drawings, and photography, the exhibit features numerous stuffed toy dogs and other dachshund-themed artifacts, celebrating the breed's artistic inspiration. Museum director Christoph Grunenberg noted that this is likely the first exhibition focusing specifically on the dachshund in art, rather than animals in general, emphasizing the dog's role as a muse for significant artists throughout history.
The dachshund has deep historical ties to Germany, with figures like Kaiser Wilhelm II and Queen Victoria being notable fans. The exhibition broadens its scope, drawing exhibits from international locations like Edinburgh, Los Angeles, and Pittsburgh. German artist Thorsten Brinkmann contributed a bronze sculpture and a colorful installation, reflecting on the dachshund's distinct form and reputation.
For select hours on Thursdays and Saturdays, the museum permits small dogs, including dachshunds, to enter three of its eight rooms. Owners must adhere to a 30-centimeter shoulder height limit and secure online time-slot tickets. A dedicated "Dachshund Lounge" will serve as a waiting area for these canine visitors, allowing them to experience the exhibition alongside their human companions.
