Cynthia Erivo's journey to becoming Elphaba in the Wicked films began with a remarkably challenging audition. The Oscar-nominated actress, 38, revealed she battled a severe fever of 103 degrees during her three-hour casting process. Despite feeling unwell, Erivo delivered a performance so compelling that casting directors Bernard Telsey and Tiffany Little Canfield were convinced she was destined for the role, with Telsey noting she "just nailed it" and "defied gravity."

Director Jon M. Chu, who was initially looking to discover new faces for the film, recognized Erivo's exceptional talent. He saw in her performance a vulnerability that perfectly captured the early stages of Elphaba's character, a side Erivo hadn't previously showcased. This audition was crucial, especially as Erivo was concurrently busy with other projects, making it difficult to schedule the casting session.
