Cynthia Erivo's Voice Miracle and Epic Plaza Theatre Reopening

The historic Plaza Theatre in Palm Springs officially reopened its doors after a significant two-year, $34 million renovation, with acclaimed performer Cynthia Erivo headlining the gala. Erivo's performance was a triumphant celebration of the revitalized 700-seat venue, blending orchestral grandeur with intimate musical moments. Despite facing a recent and alarming voice loss that threatened the show's very possibility, she delivered an unforgettable evening of music.

Just days before the reopening, Erivo battled a severe vocal issue, making her ability to perform uncertain. She shared with the audience that a 'miracle' allowed her voice to return, enabling her to fulfill her commitment. Her setlist spanned decades of music, from beloved standards to soul classics, and notably included a surprise encore medley featuring John Lennon's 'Imagine' transitioning into a gentle 'Defying Gravity.'

Erivo's performance was characterized by her powerful vocals and dynamic stage presence, often involving movement across the stage and a willingness to explore lower vocal registers. The concert featured the Palm Springs Pops Orchestra and a jazz ensemble, creating a rich auditory experience. A highlight was an extended, improvisational rendition of the neo-soul song 'Let Me Go,' lasting 11 minutes, which captivated the audience and showcased Erivo's artistic depth.
