- Production slated to begin later this year, release targeted for summer 2026

In a surprising move, the cult classic "Sharknado" franchise is set to return with a prequel film titled "Sharknado Origins." The new movie, slated to begin production later this year, will take viewers back in time to explore the early relationship between teenage versions of the original film's protagonists, Fin and April.
According to the details, the prequel will follow Fin and April as they cross paths during a perfect beach summer, where sparks immediately fly between the two. However, just as Fin is about to seal the moment with a promise ring, a massive funnel cloud forms, and sharks dramatically erupt from the ocean, giving birth to the very first "Sharknado" event.
The original "Sharknado" film, which debuted on Syfy in 2013, became a surprise cultural phenomenon thanks to its preposterous premise, a social media frenzy, and a growing lineup of celebrity fans. The franchise went on to produce five sequels and three spinoffs, amassing an impressive collection of cameos from the likes of Olivia Newton-John, Al Roker, and David Hasselhoff.
Now, with "Sharknado Origins" in development, fans of the series can look forward to a fresh take on the iconic storm's origins, as well as a glimpse into the early romance that set the stage for the franchise's signature brand of cheesy insanity. The film is expected to hit theaters in the summer of 2026.
