Cuban director David Bim recently traveled to Kolkata to accept the prestigious Golden Royal Bengal Tiger Award for Best Film in the International Competition (Innovation in Moving Images) for his documentary 'To the West, in Zapatta.' The film, which intimately portrays a family's life during the pandemic, had also won the FIPRESCI award in the same category at the 31st Kolkata International Film Festival (KIFF).
Despite initial visa issues preventing his attendance at the festival's conclusion, Bim expressed his delight upon arriving. He described Kolkata as a city that felt 'alive' and noted a profound cultural similarity between Cuba and the city. He found inspiration in the vibrant streets and the art of cinema as the art of time, expressing a future eagerness to explore filmmaking possibilities in Kolkata.
Bim also had the significant experience of receiving his award at Nandan with a photograph of Satyajit Ray in the background, a filmmaker whose work he deeply admires. He plans to conduct a master class and screen his film at SRFTI before heading to New York for the Cinema Eye Honors.
