22 Aug
Summary
- Early Cramps recordings produced by Alex Chilton have been unearthed.
- Sessions captured Lux Interior's intense ritualistic pre-performance process.
- A 1989 compilation of these tracks was unexpectedly shelved.

A collection of early Alex Chilton-produced Cramps recordings, titled 'Gravest Gravy,' has been released, offering listeners a glimpse into the band's most primordial sound. These unearthed tracks showcase the Cramps' distinctive fusion of 1950s rockabilly, exotica, and punk energy, transformed into something uniquely their own.
The recordings from 1977 at Ardent Studios in Memphis captured Lux Interior's intense pre-performance rituals. He would work himself into a frenzy before storming into the studio, a process exemplified by outtakes such as 'Rocket in My Pocket.' This unruliness was central to the band's creative medium.
These outtakes were initially compiled by the Cramps for a proposed 1989 album, complete with cover art, but the release was shelved. The songs, despite their age, retain a dangerous, vital quality, sounding as potent in 2026 as they did decades ago. The collection arrives approximately 40 years after its initial planned release.
Alex Chilton, formerly of The Box Tops and Big Star, had relocated to New York City and became fascinated with the burgeoning punk scene. He invited the Cramps to Memphis, offering free studio time at Ardent, where he had previously recorded his Big Star albums. The sessions resulted in numerous recordings of both originals and covers.
