Courtney Stodden: Child Bride to Trauma Survivor

Courtney Stodden recently revisited her highly publicized marriage to actor Doug Hutchison, which occurred in 2011 when she was 16 and he was 51. Stodden described the experience as being "a child surviving adult trauma in plain sight," emphasizing that her young age meant she did not fully comprehend consent or the implications of marriage.

Her reflections come just before she is set to undergo breast reduction surgery. Stodden sees this procedure as a way to reclaim ownership of her body, stating that for the first time, her body feels like her own. She contrasted this with her past experiences where her body was consumed by the public before she became a woman, asserting that a child bride situation is not a love story but a child enduring adult trauma.

Stodden, who began modeling at age 12, faced intense media scrutiny following her marriage. The couple separated in 2013, briefly reconciled, and Stodden eventually filed for divorce in 2018, with the split finalized in 2020. She has since moved on, marrying filmmaker Jared Safier in late 2024.
