Stodden Reclaims Narrative on Teen Marriage Abuse

Courtney Stodden is now characterizing her 2011 marriage to actor Doug Hutchison as a deeply traumatic experience involving grooming and abuse. Stodden, who now uses she/they pronouns, was just 16 years old when she married Hutchison, who was 51. The significant age difference immediately drew public scrutiny, though Hutchison initially defended it as genuine love.

Stodden alleges that Hutchison was emotionally and physically abusive, maintaining control over her finances, legal matters, and personal autonomy. She rejects the label "child bride," stating she was "a child who was exploited." Hutchison reportedly persuaded Stodden's parents to consent to the marriage within a week of their first meeting, a decision her mother now regrets.

Hutchison consistently defended the relationship publicly, even after Stodden's age became widely known. He described their union as "true love" and asserted there was "nothing illegal or immoral" about it. The couple separated in 2013, briefly reconciled, and Stodden filed for divorce in 2018, which was finalized in 2020. After Stodden accused him of grooming in 2020, Hutchison's representative called the claims retaliatory.
