Court Dismisses Petition to Block Release of Emraan Hashmi's 'Haq'

Summary
- Indore High Court dismisses petition to block 'Haq' film release
- Film inspired by landmark 1985 Shah Bano maintenance case
- Petitioner claims film violates privacy and dignity of her late parents

On November 6, 2025, the Indore bench of the Madhya Pradesh High Court dismissed a writ petition seeking to block the release of the film 'Haq', starring Emraan Hashmi and Yami Gautam. The court noted that the film was slated for release on November 7, and the petitioner had filed the petition less than a week prior, after the film had already been granted a certificate by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).
The petition was filed by Siddiqua Begum Khan, the daughter and legal heir of the late Shah Bano Begum. Her primary contention was that the film "illegally and explicitly dramatises the personal and matrimonial life" of her late parents without their consent. She argued that the film uses "fabricated, sensationalised and false portrayals" to commercialize her mother's private life, violating their fundamental right to privacy and dignity.
However, the film's producers argued that the movie is a "fictional adaptation" of the book 'Bano: Bharat ki Beti' and is only "inspired by the judgment" of the Supreme Court in the landmark 1985 Shah Bano Begum maintenance case. They asserted that the film's plot and characters are fictional and protected by their right to artistic and creative freedom.
The High Court ultimately rejected the petition, finding it "devoid of any merits" and paving the way for the film's release on November 7, 2025.
