Rugby Trumps Soaps: Coronation Street Fans Annoyed
2 Mar
Summary
- Coronation Street and Emmerdale moved to new 8pm slots.
- The schedule change is due to live Six Nations rugby coverage.
- Fans expressed frustration over the temporary soap schedule disruption.

Coronation Street and Emmerdale have been temporarily removed from their prime-time slots this Friday, March 6th, disappointing fans. The scheduling disruption is due to ITV's live broadcast of the 2026 Guinness Men's Six Nations rugby match between Wales and Ireland, taking place at Dublin's Aviva Stadium.
This change impacts the new 'power hour' format launched in January, which typically airs Emmerdale at 8pm followed by Coronation Street at 8:30pm, Monday through Friday. Viewers have expressed significant frustration online, with many lamenting the absence of their favorite soaps for the rugby coverage.
ITV's director of television, Kevin Lygo, had previously explained the new format aimed to provide a more digestible and viewer-led experience. He highlighted that 30-minute episodes better cater to modern viewing habits and expectations for pacey storytelling.
Despite the current schedule shake-up, Coronation Street and Emmerdale are set to return to their regular 8pm to 9pm slot the following week, commencing Monday, March 9th. The rugby coverage is fronted by Jill Douglas.
