An impressive collection of silver, art, and antiques from Corby Castle in Cumbria generated £1.48 million during a three-day auction last week. The sale surpassed expectations, with prices exceeding initial estimates by 55% as bidders from around the world participated.
More than 1,130 items were offered, featuring period portraits, 17th-century tapestries, and 19th-century furniture. The silver collection proved exceptionally popular, with all 324 lots selling for approximately £699,290. Notable silver pieces included an Indian silver dish and cover for £22,000 and an Edward VII monteith bowl for £16,000.
A still-life painting titled "The Day's Hunt" by Giorgio Lucchesi achieved the highest price at £42,000. Decorative items also performed well, with a bronze mantle clock from 1870 selling for £8,500 and a pair of bronze candlesticks for £9,000. Further silver items from the castle are slated for a second auction in March.
