Doug Leibowitz, a middle school drama teacher, harbors aspirations of becoming a playwright. He finds himself in a state of discontent, viewing himself as a genius yet fearing failure. At the start of the school year, Doug hopes to reconcile with Abigail, the art teacher, who recently ended their relationship. His plans are dashed when Abigail reveals she is now dating the school principal.
Fueled by spite, Doug decides to secretly produce a controversial student musical. His plan involves leveraging a student production to exploit a national tragedy, intending to create scandal and undermine the principal's standing. This scheme, driven by Doug's self-absorption, disregards the potential harm to his students.
The young actors, portraying Doug's theater students, offer a bright spot with their genuinely funny performances. Despite their own petty tendencies, they are presented as less off-putting than their teacher.
