Conjuring Universe's 'Last Rites' Draws Inspiration from 'Logan' Farewell

As the Conjuring Universe prepares to bid farewell to its iconic paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren, the franchise is taking cues from an unexpected source: the 2017 superhero film Logan. According to director Michael Chaves, the emotional backbone of the upcoming 'The Conjuring: Last Rites' was heavily influenced by Hugh Jackman's gritty swan song as Wolverine.

Chaves explains that, like Logan, he wanted 'Last Rites' to deliver more than just scares, aiming for a sense of closure and transition. The film follows the Warrens in 1988 as they've retired from their investigative work, until a demonic case tied to their past pulls them and their daughter Judy back into the supernatural fray.

The director says the theme of "letting go" drove the entire story, as the Warrens must come to terms with Judy starting a life of her own and carrying on their legacy. This emotional throughline is balanced by what Chaves calls the "darkest chapter" in the Conjuring series, with an opening sequence that serves as a full-circle moment for the iconic couple.

While the Conjuring Universe isn't closing its doors just yet, with spin-offs and prequels in development, Chaves confirms that 'Last Rites' marks the definitive end of the Warrens' story. Just as Hugh Jackman once said about Logan, never say never - but for now, fans can look forward to a poignant farewell for these beloved paranormal investigators.
